Italian anti-terrorism authorities have arrested a Tunisian national in southern Italy on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack on Italian soil, according to a statement released Friday by police in Rome.
The suspect, who was living in the city of Cosenza in the Calabria region, is reportedly wanted by Tunisian authorities for involvement in terrorist activities. Italian police say the man was preparing to carry out an attack in the near future and had pledged allegiance to Salafism, an ultraconservative Sunni Islamist ideology.
Authorities described the man as an “organizer” within a criminal network engaged in radicalization, proselytism, and military-style training. Surveillance operations uncovered evidence of a group preparing for terrorist actions, police said.
During the investigation, officers found jihadist propaganda videos, footage of attacks and armed conflict, as well as instructional materials detailing how to build explosives and use weapons.
