No fewer than 100 Russian soldiers allegedly tried to desert from a military unit in the city of Krasnodar.

In a significant incident reflecting internal challenges within the Russian military, approximately 100 soldiers reportedly attempted to desert from a military unit in Krasnodar, southern Russia. According to Ukrainian outlet Ukrainska Pravda, citing Russian Telegram channels Baza and Ostorozhno,

Novosti, seven soldiers managed to breach the facility’s perimeter, with four subsequently apprehended and three remaining at large. The escape prompted a swift response from security forces, who cordoned off the area.

This event underscores a growing trend of desertions within the Russian armed forces.

Reports indicate that an entire regiment of over 1,000 soldiers from the 20th Guards Motor Rifle Division in Volgograd deserted amid escalating tensions in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Additionally, the number of desertion cases in Russian courts reached record levels in 2024, with many deserters seeking refuge with relatives or through underground networks.

These internal challenges come as the conflict in Ukraine intensifies. Despite Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a 30-hour Easter ceasefire, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reported continued Russian attacks, including drone strikes and shelling along the front lines. A recent Russian missile strike on the city of Sumy resulted in 35 deaths and 129 injuries, marking one of the deadliest attacks this year.
