Shoigu Says Moscow Is Ready to Resume Nuclear Talks with the U.S.

Russia is ready to restart nuclear arms control negotiations with the U.S., according to Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu.

Dialogue Possible After Long Pause

Shoigu’s remarks come more than two years after Moscow suspended its involvement in the New START treaty, the last major arms agreement between the two nations.

Trump Administration Showing Willingness

“The Trump administration is currently demonstrating its readiness to resume dialogue,” Shoigu told the state-run TASS news agency.

NATO and U.S. Missile Defense Cited as Threats

Shoigu insisted that any new treaty must consider NATO expansion, U.S. global missile defense, and the deployment of new ground-based missiles.

France’s Role Raises Concerns

Shoigu also pointed to French President Emmanuel Macron’s proposal to share France’s nuclear deterrent with other European countries as a growing concern.

Treaty Terms Must Reflect “New Realities”

“These actions create additional military threats for Russia,” Shoigu said. He added, “We’re waiting for specific proposals from our American partners.”

Russia Still Observing Treaty Limits — For Now

Despite suspending participation, Shoigu said Russia continues to observe the New START treaty’s warhead limits — 1,550 deployed strategic nuclear weapons.

Shoigu Blames Biden for Collapse

Shoigu accused President Biden of pursuing “irresponsible” policies that undermined New START and forced Russia to walk away.

Nuclear Testing Threat Resurfaces

Shoigu warned that Russia could resume nuclear testing in response to U.S. actions or perceived threats from the West.

New Role, Same Influence

After over a decade as defense minister, Shoigu now leads Russia’s Security Council — a powerful body advising President Putin on national security.
