Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has sharply dismissed Vladimir Putin’s offer of a temporary ceasefire as an attempt to manipulate international perception.

The proposal, tied to Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, was criticized as a public relations move rather than a genuine step toward peace.

Ceasefire Proposal Linked to Moscow Parade

Putin announced a planned ceasefire in Ukraine from May 8 to May 10, coinciding with celebrations marking 80 years since the defeat of Nazi Germany.

However, Zelensky, speaking in his daily video address to citizens, called the timing a ploy to ensure “silence” during Russia’s May 9 parade in Red Square, as reported by Digi24.

“We value the lives of people, not parades,” Zelensky stated. He stressed that there is no reason to delay a ceasefire until May 8 and warned that pausing the fighting only for celebratory purposes could lead to renewed violence immediately afterward.

Ongoing Pressure for Genuine Peace

Zelensky accused Russia of manipulating the world community by offering limited ceasefires while rejecting broader peace initiatives.

He noted that Ukraine has repeatedly accepted American proposals for full ceasefires and has independently called for halts to attacks on civilian targets, including a proposed 30-day Easter truce, which Russia refused.

“Every new day is further proof that we must apply real pressure on Russia to end this war, a war only Russia wanted,” Zelensky emphasized. He reaffirmed Ukraine’s willingness to collaborate with any partners capable of helping achieve a sustainable peace.

Strength on the Battlefield Supports Diplomacy

Zelensky also commented on recent front-line developments, rejecting Moscow’s claims that Ukrainian forces had been expelled from the Kursk region.

He praised Ukrainian troops for holding and advancing in key areas, stating, “The power on the front gives power to diplomacy.”

Additionally, Zelensky confirmed that negotiations between Ukraine and the United States over a minerals agreement are progressing well, with the document evolving into a fairer, mutually beneficial accord.
