New Volcanic Eruption in Iceland: 4,000 Evacuated

The eruption occurred north of the town of Grindavík this morning. On Saturday, an evacuation alert was issued to the approximately 4,000 residents of Grindavík, who had until Monday evening to leave the town.

The volcanic mountain Porbjörn is reported to have shifted 20 centimeters westward.

This was reported by the Icelandic media outlet RÚV.

“The Coast Guard helicopter is en route to investigate the exact location of the eruption. The initial indications are that it’s near Sundhnúk,” said Benedikt Ófeigsson, a natural disaster expert at the Icelandic Meteorological Agency, to RÚV.

This is the fifth eruption on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021.

Just before Christmas, residents of Grindavík were also evacuated in connection with an eruption just north of the town.
