For many dog owners, managing their pet's behavior in public can be a challenge.
But an experienced dog trainer has shared a simple and effective method to help dogs stay calm and composed in busy areas like restaurants, parks, or the beach.
Dogs are more than just loyal companions; they bring joy, love, and even health benefits into our lives. Studies show that spending time with dogs can boost physical activity and reduce stress by increasing levels of happiness hormones like oxytocin and dopamine, according to The Mirror.
But even the most adorable dogs can become a handful in public without proper training.
A Trainer's Clever Trick for Calm Dogs
Jack, an experienced dog trainer specializing in dachshunds—a breed known for their big personalities despite their small size—shares helpful tips on his TikTok channel Dovecotedogs.
In one of his videos, he demonstrates a straightforward technique called "place training," which teaches dogs to stay calm and relaxed on a blanket.
Jack uses his dog Ralph to demonstrate.
First, he introduces a blanket that serves as Ralph’s designated "safe spot." In a controlled environment, Jack places food on the blanket, rewarding Ralph for staying on it. After a short time, Ralph is allowed to leave the blanket, only to be rewarded again when he returns.
Over time, this repetitive and positive reinforcement builds a strong association between the blanket and a calm, safe space.
Jack explains that this training can be adapted to public settings, such as at restaurants or the beach, where the blanket provides familiarity and comfort for the dog.
