A 79-year-old man tragically drowned in the Landwehr Canal in Berlin's Tiergarten neighborhood on Thursday while attempting to save his dog.

Rescued the Dog

According to a police spokesperson, the elderly man jumped into the canal to rescue his dog, when he tragicly drowned. The dog ultimately survived the ordeal, because of the mans heroic act.

He managed to bring the dog to the shore, before the man lost his strength and went under the surface.

It was a passersby that alerted the fire department at around noon,. They reported that someone had disappeared underwater near the Cornelius Bridge.

Found by Divers

The initial search efforts from the land and with a helicopter were unsuccessful.

Firefighters were called to the scene, and divers ended up coming out and eventually located the man's lifeless body underwater.

Using a multipurpose boat, they brought him to shore. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
