As winter approaches and many car owners switch to winter tires, a warning light often appears in the car—one that many choose to ignore.
Lasse Dahlqvist from the Swedish Tire Specialists National Association warns against this practice, as the warning signal could indicate more serious issues that may be costly to overlook, CarUp reports.
Modern cars are equipped with systems that detect changes in tire pressure or size, which can trigger warning lights when tires are changed.
According to Dahlqvist, it’s essential to thoroughly inspect the tires when the warning light appears, as it can signal issues such as low tire pressure or damage that needs immediate attention.
"My advice is to have the tires checked at the nearest gas station or workshop to ensure everything is in order," says Dahlqvist.
He notes that a quick inspection can reveal punctures or pressure loss, which may not be visible just by looking at the tire. Even small differences, such as those between summer and winter tires, can affect the car’s system and cause warning signals.
Dahlqvist also points out that many car owners underestimate the importance of correct tire pressure and condition.
Low-pressure tires can create dangerous situations, especially in slippery or wet weather, as they affect the car’s grip and control. To prevent false alarms and ensure accurate tire pressure monitoring, he recommends that workshops calibrate the car’s active sensor systems after a tire change.
If the warning light does appear, it can often be resolved with a simple pressure check and calibration.
