A Widening Problem
Ford is recalling 769,000 diesel cars across Europe after German authorities uncovered faulty particulate filters in several models, according to Automobilwoche.
The defective filters, which fail to meet emission standards, affect vehicles manufactured between 2014 and the present.
According to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), these filters allow emissions to exceed legal limits, leading to many vehicles failing inspections.
Vehicle owners are required to visit service centers to recalibrate or replace the filters. In some cases, a complete filter replacement may be necessary.
The financial burden for these repairs is substantial. Ford has stated it will compensate owners who have already paid for filter replacements, but costs could reach $2,000 USD per car if repairs are not covered.
This issue couldn’t have come at a worse time for Ford. The company has reported an 18% drop in European sales this year. Additionally, the recall brings potential fines from the European Union for non-compliance with emissions standards.
Ford’s ongoing struggles in Europe are compounded by a lack of enthusiasm for its electric vehicle lineup, which has already forced the company to reduce production of certain models.
