Sweden is continuing its trend of closing gas stations, with many speculating that the era of new gas stations has come to an end. Now, one in the town of Tensta is being demolished "for safety reasons."

According to housing and property councillor Clara Lindblom, tearing down the gas station will make the area safer.

"This is an incredibly desolate, dark, and unsafe place," she explained, as reported by the Swedish news outlet Mitt i.

Along with the gas station, a nearby supermarket will also be demolished. The space will instead be used to build 400 new apartments.

Despite concerns about access to refueling, Lindblom is optimistic.

"I think it will get worse; people will have a slightly longer distance to a gas station," she admitted, "but the area will become much safer and better."

The company behind the soon-to-be-demolished gas station recently announced plans to double the number of fast chargers in Sweden by 2025, signaling a shift toward electric vehicles.

While some Swedes believe that the last new gas station in the country has already been built, others remain skeptical.
