Japanese Car Brand Pauses All Vehicle Exports to the U.S.

Japanese automaker Mitsubishi is the latest brand to pause all vehicle exports to the U.S. Once current inventory runs out, prices are expected to rise sharply.

Mitsubishi Has a Stockpile—But It Won’t Last Forever

While Mitsubishi dealerships still have plenty of vehicles available—enough for around 100 days—shipments have officially stopped.

Why Mitsubishi Stopped Shipping Cars to the U.S.

The decision comes in response to former President Trump’s 25% tariff on imported vehicles. Mitsubishi fears serious financial consequences, especially for models like the Outlander.

Every Mitsubishi Sold in the U.S. Is Made in Japan

That makes the brand especially vulnerable to new tariffs. Unlike some rivals, Mitsubishi doesn’t have domestic production in the U.S. to fall back on.

“We’re Holding Cars at the Port,” Says Mitsubishi Spokesperson

In a statement to Automotive News, a Mitsubishi spokesperson said vehicles are being held at ports until there is more clarity around tariffs and trade policy.

Dealership Inventory Remains Stable—For Now

Despite the shipping pause, Mitsubishi says there’s still enough stock at dealerships and customers won’t notice an immediate difference in availability.

Dealers Still Have Over 20,000 Cars in Stock

According to Automotive News, Mitsubishi dealerships currently have 20,245 cars on lots—enough to cover sales for nearly 100 days under normal conditions.

Mitsubishi Is Not Alone

Other foreign automakers have also paused U.S. shipments due to tariffs, including Jaguar-Land Rover, Lotus, Volkswagen, and Audi. Volvo went a step further and pulled the S90 model entirely from U.S. sales.

Prices Are Expected to Climb

While current stock isn’t directly affected by the tariffs, Mitsubishi is already preparing for price hikes. Dealer incentives have been cut significantly.

Outlander Discount Slashed

The cash rebate on Mitsubishi’s best-selling model, the Outlander, has been reduced from around $1,500 to just $1,000—signaling more price tightening to come.
