Mercedes-Benz has a storied history of producing iconic and exclusive models, and the SLS AMG stands out as a significant milestone.
Only Nine Units Worldwide
Launched in 2007, this two-seater sports car was designed to evoke the spirit of the legendary 300 SL "Gullwing." Developed by Mark Fetherston, the SLS featured a robust 6.3-liter V8 engine, with various impressive iterations following its debut, according to Motor.
Among these, the SLS AMG Electric Drive emerged as a groundbreaking model, being the first electric supercar from Mercedes.
Limited to just nine units worldwide, each priced at a minimum of €400,000 (approximately $420,000), it boasted four electric motors producing 751 horsepower and 1,000 Nm of torque.
The SLS Electric Drive could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 3.9 seconds. While its maximum range of 250 km (about 155 miles) seemed modest by today’s standards, the model marked a pivotal moment in Mercedes' journey towards electric mobility.
Solidify Position With Luxury EV
Currently, Mercedes is exploring a revival of the SLS name with a new electric supercar, drawing inspiration from the Vision One-Eleven prototype unveiled last year.
This upcoming model is expected to enhance AMG's performance credentials as the brand transitions from high-performance combustion engines to electric powertrains. CEO Michael Schiebe has acknowledged the slow sales of electric vehicles but remains firm on the company’s commitment to an all-electric future.
As the original SLS Electric Drive units now surpass €1 million (around $1.05 million) in value, the anticipated model aims to further solidify Mercedes’ position in the luxury electric car market while honoring its rich heritage.
While the project is still in its early stages, details regarding performance specifications and release timelines are yet to be disclosed.
