The electric version of the Mercedes CLA, seen by many as a make-or-break moment for the German automaker, is facing delays due to critical software problems.

Mercedes has confirmed that the launch in China will be postponed from April to August, leaving uncertainty about its rollout in Europe.

Chinese media outlets report that the problems are linked to the car’s electrical and electronic systems, which have proven more challenging than expected. Mercedes is running extensive tests to resolve the issues but hasn’t provided a clear timeline for when the CLA will hit the European market.

According to Cnevpost, The CLA is built on Mercedes’ new MMA platform, designed to support both electric and combustion engines. While this flexibility was supposed to be an advantage, it has created complex technical hurdles.

To tackle these, Mercedes has set up a research and development center in Shanghai, where hundreds of engineers are working to fix the system and enhance the car’s technology, including features for self-driving.

The stakes are high for Mercedes, as the CLA is a crucial model in its push to dominate the electric vehicle market. Any delays could impact sales and give competitors an edge.

But it’s not uncommon for new car models, especially those with cutting-edge tech, to face setbacks.

A Surprising Gasoline Option

Despite being marketed as an electric car, the CLA will also include a gasoline-powered option — a decision that has sparked surprise and debate, especially on social media.

Many were caught off guard by Mercedes’ choice to source the engine from China.
