Mercedes-Benz USA has issued a recall for over 27,000 vehicles in the United States due to a potential issue with the engine control unit (ECU) software.

Engine Overheat or Stall

This defect could cause engines to overheat or stall, posing a risk of accidents or fires, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall involves specific luxury sedans, including the 2021-2023 Mercedes-Benz S580 and Maybach S580 models, according to Ziare.

Both vehicles are equipped with 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engines that produce 496 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. These powerful engines allow for rapid acceleration, with the S580 reaching 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.

Check Your Vehicle

The ECU software glitch could result in sudden engine shutdowns or overheating, increasing the likelihood of accidents or fires. A stalling engine, especially at high speeds, can lead to dangerous situations on the road. Additionally, engine overheating poses a significant fire risk.

Mercedes-Benz plans to notify the affected vehicle owners and will offer a free ECU software update at authorized dealerships. The recall highlights the importance of software integrity in modern cars, particularly luxury models that rely heavily on technology for performance and safety.

No injuries or accidents have been reported so far, but the recall emphasizes the need for rigorous testing of automotive systems. Owners of the affected vehicles are encouraged to contact their dealers as soon as possible to schedule repairs.

The NHTSA encourages all Mercedes owners to check if their vehicle is included in the recall by visiting its website.
