The 2025 Tesla Model Y, which will replace Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle, has been spotted testing on public roads in California, a full year ahead of its official reveal.
The sighting, reported by CarBuzz, has added to the growing excitement around the updated electric SUV.
A Reddit user, known as sheffield712, snapped a photo of the heavily camouflaged vehicle while it was traveling at about 70 mph (112 km/h) through the Bay Area in San Francisco.
The user noted that the vehicle's erratic movements suggested it might have been undergoing a steering test, possibly related to Tesla’s autonomous driving systems.
The latest images show that most of the camouflage is focused on the rear of the vehicle.
According to CarBuzz, this could be hiding a full-width light bar with the T-E-S-L-A lettering, similar to the design seen on the Cybertruck.
Earlier sightings of what’s believed to be the 2025 Model Y—codenamed ‘Project Juniper’—showed cladding on both the front and rear of the vehicle, hinting at significant design changes.
While the authenticity of these images hasn't been fully confirmed, they suggest that the new Model Y will differ from the recent updates made to the Model 3 sedan, which was unveiled in early 2024.
The Model 3 update was spotted 10 months before its official reveal, indicating that the 2025 Model Y, first seen in July 2024, could go on sale by mid-2025 in overseas markets.
The current Model Y debuted in 2022 and quickly became Australia’s best-selling electric vehicle in 2023, continuing to lead in 2024. Globally, it also topped the charts as the most popular car in 2023, surpassing the Toyota RAV4.
