Tesla has received approval from the state of Brandenburg to begin expanding its electric car plant in Grünheide, near Berlin, Tag24 reports.
The State Environmental Agency granted an initial permit for the expansion, which will involve building a large hall to house new production units and optimizing existing facilities.
Importantly, no additional forest will need to be cleared, as the expansion will take place on the existing site of Tesla’s only electric car factory in Europe.
Tesla aims to double its production capacity at the Grünheide plant, increasing from the planned 500,000 cars per year to one million.
The facility's battery cell production will also see a boost in storage capacity.
Tesla submitted its expansion request in three phases but has not set a clear timetable due to the current challenging market conditions.
Despite this uncertainty, the company remains committed to its growth plans. The plant currently employs around 12,000 workers and plays a key role in Tesla's European operations.
