Tesla's Cybertruck has been widely marketed for its durability, especially its "unbreakable" windows. However, a recent incident in the U.S. demonstrated that even these reinforced windows are not immune to theft.
Removed Shatterproof Window
A thief managed to break into a Cybertruck by removing the supposedly shatterproof window entirely, raising questions about the vehicle's security features, according to Stern.
The Cybertruck’s design has always highlighted its robust features, including its stainless steel body and specially engineered windows.
These windows first gained attention during the vehicle’s 2019 unveiling when Tesla's Chief Designer, Franz von Holzhausen, famously cracked them with a steel ball.
Despite the damage, Tesla CEO Elon Musk assured that the glass would be improved.
No Alerts During Break-In
Years later, tests showed that while the Cybertruck’s glass could withstand significant impacts, it was still vulnerable.
This vulnerability was exploited recently by a thief who managed to remove a Cybertruck window without shattering it, as shown in a surveillance video shared on Facebook. The thief peeled the damaged but intact window from the door, accessed the vehicle, and stole items before fleeing.
What’s more concerning is that the vehicle's owner, Anuj Thakkar, reported receiving no alerts during the break-in.
Despite having Tesla’s Sentry Mode activated — designed to detect and respond to threats with alarms and notifications — Thakkar was not alerted to the theft. Other Tesla owners have reported similar issues, leading to concerns about the reliability of the system.
While the ease of removing the window is troubling, Tesla’s failure to notify the owner is even more significant.
