A new electric vehicle co-developed by Toyota and Subaru is slated for release in 2026, according to a report by Nikkei Asia.
This upcoming EV will be aimed at markets in Japan, Europe, and North America, with the possibility of also being available in Australia.
Specific details about the new model are still under wraps, but the report suggests it will share some components with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the two automakers’ first jointly developed electric SUVs.
Toyota, the world’s largest car manufacturer, holds a 20% stake in Subaru, making collaborations between the two companies a strategic partnership.
Production of the new electric car is set to begin at Subaru's Yajima factory in Japan in January 2026, with an ambitious target of producing up to 20,000 vehicles per month.
The partnership aims to capitalize on the growing demand for electric vehicles in global markets, despite recent slowdowns in EV sales in the U.S.
Delays in U.S.-Built Electric SUV
Subaru had previously announced plans to launch three new electric SUVs by 2026, all developed in collaboration with Toyota.
One of these models, a seven-seater SUV to be built in the U.S., has faced delays due to design changes.
Details of the third future model to be developed between Toyota and Subaru remain unknown at this stage.
