Big changes are coming to Volkswagen’s lineup of electric cars.
Starting in 2026, all ID models will get a major design upgrade, along with better performance, more affordable batteries, and exciting new features.
Plus, a fresh ID.2 concept car will be revealed soon, giving a glimpse of what’s ahead for the brand.
What’s Changing for VW’s Electric Cars?
Volkswagen’s Head of Development, Kai Grünitz, spilled the details during an interview at the Los Angeles Auto Show, according to Mobilsiden.
He confirmed that every ID model will be revamped as part of a big update to the MEB platform—the foundation of all VW’s electric cars.
Grünitz promised “enormous improvements” compared to today’s models. The redesign will bring a new look, taking inspiration from classic VW designs, while also delivering better performance and more affordable batteries.
The updated ID cars will follow the style of the ID.2all concept, which was designed by VW’s Andreas Mindt. This concept car borrows ideas from beloved models like the first-generation Scirocco, Golf, and Beetle.
The goal? To make Volkswagen a brand people love again, with cars that feel true to its roots.
The New ID.2 Concept
Volkswagen is also planning to showcase a new ID.2 concept car at the Munich Motor Show in September 2025. This small SUV will follow in the footsteps of the ID.2all, which debuted in 2023, and will be the second model based on VW’s compact MEB Entry platform.
The ID.2 will compete with other small electric cars, like the Hyundai Inster and Citroën ë-C3. It’s expected to have battery options of 38 kWh and 58 kWh, offering a range of up to 450 km. Grünitz confirmed that the production version of the ID.2all is on track and will be ready for launch in late 2025 or early 2026.
Volkswagen is banking on the ID.2all to kickstart a new chapter.
Grünitz says customers will notice a much bigger transformation than they expect when the new models hit the streets.
Why These Changes Matter
Volkswagen is facing tough times.
Sales are slipping in Europe, and Chinese automakers are gaining ground fast.
VW has also struggled to bring an affordable electric car to market and had to delay plans, which has hurt its finances. Some factories are even being shut down.
These challenges are why VW is doubling down on these updates. The company wants to reconnect with its iconic past while stepping up its game in the electric car race.
Volkswagen’s electric offerings already include the ID.3 city car, ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs, the ID.7 sedan, the ID.7 Tourer station wagon, and the ID. Buzz minivan. With the big updates planned for 2026, VW hopes to win over drivers again and solidify its spot as a leader in the growing EV market.
