Volvo is recalling 16,500 cars worldwide over a critical manufacturing defect that could cause brake pedals to detach in several popular models.

It Can Come Loose

The affected models include the Volvo S60, V60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, S90L, XC60, and XC90.

In Sweden alone, 1,621 vehicles are part of the recall.

The recall covers select cars from the 2020-2021 model years, where a production issue has led to insufficient strength in the brake pedal mount, according to Boosted.

Specifically, the pedal linkage may not have been secured with the necessary torque, increasing the chance it could come loose. If this happens, it could impair braking and potentially cause the driver to lose control.

Official Recall Campaign

While the car’s parking brake can be used to stop in emergencies, a malfunctioning primary brake pedal could still create dangerous situations.

Volvo has warned that compromised braking ability or sudden loss of control could increase the risk of serious accidents, potentially injuring drivers, passengers, and others on the road.

Due to the risk, Volvo has launched an official recall campaign.

Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Volvo and offered an inspection and repair of the brake pedal mechanism at no charge.

The recall follows another large-scale recall from Stellantis, which recently called back over 44,000 vehicles for similar brake issues.
