Misplacing your car keys can be a frustrating experience. Whether you dropped them at a coffee shop, left them inside your vehicle, or simply can’t find them, there are several solutions to help you get back on the road.

1. If You Have a Spare Key

Most new cars come with two keys, so it’s wise to keep one at home. If you have a spare key, ask a family member or friend to bring it to you. Some insurance plans also cover key retrieval services, which can help you get home to fetch your spare.

However, be cautious. If you suspect your keys were stolen, consider having someone guard your vehicle while you retrieve the spare to prevent potential theft.

2. If Your Keys Are Locked Inside the Car

If you accidentally locked your keys inside your car, check to see if any windows are open. If they’re all closed, avoid DIY methods that could damage your vehicle. Instead, call a locksmith or your insurance company. Professionals have special tools, such as inflatable wedges, that can unlock your door without causing harm.

3. If You Don't Have a Spare Key

If you’re on the road with only one key, the situation becomes trickier. It’s always best to travel with both keys to avoid this hassle. If you’ve lost your only key, contact your car manufacturer for a replacement. You’ll need to provide identification, vehicle registration, the key code (found in your owner’s manual), and your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN).

4. The Cost of Duplicating a Key

The cost of making a duplicate key varies widely. For older cars with traditional keys, expect to pay around $30. However, if your vehicle has advanced features like keyless entry or smartphone connectivity, the price can soar to $300 or more.

Being prepared can save you time and stress. Always keep a backup key handy to avoid the complications of losing your primary one.
