WhatsApp is introducing a new feature in its Android app that aims to enhance its Status section, making it more like a social network, similar to Instagram, writes El Economista.
The Status feature allows users to share photos, videos, or GIFs that are visible for 24 hours before disappearing.
Previously, WhatsApp’s Status updates could include stickers, text, and basic editing tools.
Introducing Status updates
Now, the app is rolling out an enhancement that lets users tag others in their Status updates.
This new feature, available in version 2.24.20.3, was initially tested in version 2.24.6.19 and is being released globally through the Google Play Store.
The update introduces an '@' button in the Status interface, allowing users to mention contacts directly.
When a user tags someone in their Status, the tagged contact will receive a notification.
Importantly, this tagging is private; others viewing the Status will not see who has been mentioned, preserving the confidentiality of the interaction.
Tagged contacts will always receive the update, even if they cannot see other Status updates due to privacy settings.
Additionally, similar to Instagram, mentioned users can share these Status updates with their own contacts, though the original creator’s identity will remain hidden.
This feature is already available to some beta testers and will be rolled out to all Android users in the coming weeks.
