As true crime documentaries continue to capture the public’s imagination, some are doing more than just entertaining — they’re helping solve real-world crimes. Streaming platforms now serve as unexpected tools for justice, as viewers become part of the accountability process.

Elderly Con Artist Caught After Global Exposure

Dionne Marie Hanna, an 84-year-old British woman featured in the Netflix documentary Con Mum, has been arrested in Singapore after victims recognized her on screen and reported her to authorities, HotNews.ro reports.

The documentary, released on March 25, details Hanna’s elaborate scams in which she falsely claimed to be a member of Brunei’s royal family and pretended to be battling cancer. These lies were used to convince victims to send her money for legal fees and to open foreign bank accounts — funds she promised to repay but never did.

Authorities believe she made roughly $200,000 through the scheme.

Victims Include Her Own Son

One of the most disturbing revelations is that Hanna also scammed her estranged son, Graham Hornigold, a London-based pastry chef. After reconnecting with him in 2020 following a 45-year separation, she left him burdened with massive debts.

The case took a dramatic turn shortly after Con Mum premiered. Several individuals in Singapore who had been deceived by Hanna contacted local authorities, identifying her from the Netflix program. She was subsequently taken into custody.

If convicted, Hanna could face up to 20 years in prison for fraud-related offenses under Singaporean law.

Her arrest highlights the growing role of digital media and public vigilance in bringing long-avoided justice to light — no matter how much time has passed.
