Born George Robert "Bob" Newhart in Illinois in 1929, the American entertainer transitioned from a career as an accountant in Chicago to becoming a celebrated comedy star.

He made his breakthrough in the early 1960s with a comedy album, which paved the way for a career spanning around 60 years.

Newhart became widely known for The Bob Newhart Show (1972-1978) and Newhart (1982-1990), series that showcased his comedic talent and became classics.

His film roles included the Christmas movie Elf (2003) alongside Will Ferrell and Legally Blonde 2 with Reese Witherspoon.

In addition to his work in TV and film, Newhart was a decorated entertainer, winning multiple awards including several Grammys and a Golden Globe.
