Can You Eat a Banana Every Day?

Trending Now

Bananas are a fruit found in every household. Whether eaten as a snack, in a cake, or even as a side dish, they can be prepared in many ways.

This is fortunate because bananas are a source of nutrients offering numerous benefits. While the saying goes that an apple a day keeps the doctor away, the same can be said for bananas, but there are certain rules to follow.

Indeed, bananas have many health benefits.

The Benefits of Bananas

A British study published by the European Heart Journal in 2022, which followed about 25,000 people aged 40 to 79, showed that those with a diet rich in potassium had a lower risk of stroke.

Bananas are among the foods highest in potassium.

They are also rich in fiber, which helps maintain intestinal health. Additionally, they contain starches that may have anti-cancer properties, according to the AACR. These starches could reduce the risk of developing certain gastrointestinal cancers, particularly those of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, and bile ducts.

The Limits of Bananas

While bananas have many benefits, there are some negatives to consider.

Bananas are a very calorie-dense food, even one of the most calorie-dense fruits, with an average of 90 kcal per 100g. Since a banana weighs on average 120g, its energy contribution is higher than that of an apple, for example.

Therefore, one should not consume only bananas. Moreover, bananas can also be dangerous for people with kidney failure. Beyond 5 to 6 grams per day, it can cause them cardiac rhythm disorders. With one banana a day, you get 400 mg of potassium.

As the daily recommended potassium intake is 2g, it is entirely possible to eat one banana a day, but no more. You can eat a banana a day, but do not exceed this quantity to avoid potassium problems or consume too many calories from this fruit.
