Aging might not be as inevitable as we think — at least not at the same speed.
A new study suggests that a simple daily supplement can actually slow biological aging, and the best part? You may already have it in your kitchen.
According to research published in Nature Aging, taking one gram of omega-3 fatty acids per day can reduce the body’s biological age by several months over a three-year period.
The study, conducted in Switzerland, followed 700 participants over the age of 70, dividing them into groups:
Some received omega-3 supplements
Others took vitamin D
Another group followed a regular exercise program
A control group took a placebo
Scientists used epigenetic clocks, a method that analyzes chemical markers on DNA molecules to track the body’s rate of aging. The results showed that omega-3 supplementation had a clear effect, and when combined with exercise and vitamin D, the benefits were even greater.
Not a Miracle Cure, But a Promising Step
Aging expert Tinna Stevnsner from Aarhus University called the findings promising, though she cautioned against calling omega-3 a miracle cure.
“This suggests that omega-3 supplementation may be beneficial for some people,” she said to TV2, adding that the effect may depend on individual fatty acid levels.
While the study focused on people over 70, it raises interesting possibilities for younger age groups as well. Previous research has already linked omega-3, vitamin D, and exercise to a reduced risk of infections and cancer — but now, it seems they may also keep your body younger for longer.
