New research suggests that just one small handful of pistachios is enough.

Trending Now

The eyes are our natural lenses to the world, but over time, factors like age and exposure to blue light from screens can impact vision.

Researchers have recently discovered that a daily dose of pistachios may offer unexpected benefits in defending the eyes and brain.

Packed with the plant pigment lutein, pistachios may provide a protective effect on sight and brain function when consumed regularly.

Why Pistachios Are a Natural Shield

The protective ingredient is lutein, a powerful antioxidant also found in foods like egg yolks, spinach, and peppers.

Lutein is known to accumulate in high concentrations in pistachios, and it acts as a kind of "sunglasses" for the eyes. This pigment not only filters harmful blue light from digital screens but may also help in delaying age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a common eye condition that can lead to severe vision loss.

In a small clinical study conducted by researchers at Tufts University's Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy, 36 participants were split into two groups. Over a three-month period, one group maintained their regular diet, while the other consumed 57 grams (about a handful) of pistachios daily.

Within just six weeks, the group that added pistachios showed a notable increase in macular pigment optical density, which acts as a shield for the eye against blue light. This density remained high throughout the study.

Added Brain Benefits

Beyond eye protection, lutein offers benefits for brain health.

The antioxidant can cross the blood-brain barrier, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress in brain cells. Studies have linked higher lutein levels to improved memory and faster neural processing, suggesting that regular intake of lutein-rich foods could also support cognitive health.

Dr. Elizabeth Johnson, lead researcher on the study, noted, “The role of lutein in eye and brain health could offer a natural way to help protect against age-related decline.”

Incorporating a small amount of pistachios into your diet may offer protection for both eyes and brain, making it a simple, natural addition with lasting benefits.
