It might sound too good to be true, but researchers from the Shibaura Institute of Technology in Japan have documented that certain foods — particularly those rich in polyphenols — can activate the same satiety hormones targeted by obesity and diabetes medications.
Polyphenols are natural compounds found in everything from berries, olives, and red wine to coffee, tea, and dark chocolate.
When these bitter flavors reach receptors in the gut, they trigger a hormonal response that helps regulate blood sugar and suppress appetite.
Professor Naomi Osakabe, who led the study, explained:
Our study highlights the importance of consuming polyphenols to reduce the risk of obesity and diabetes by regulating blood sugar levels and appetite.
This was reported by the media outlet Onet.pl.
Polyphenols also act as antioxidants and possess anti-inflammatory properties, offering protection against a range of chronic diseases.
They slow digestion, extend the feeling of fullness, and produce hormonal signals similar to those activated by medications like Ozempic.
While research is still ongoing, the findings suggest that diet could play a much larger role in the fight against obesity — without the need for prescriptions, side effects, or costly medications.
