Walmart shoppers should check their refrigerators immediately as the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall on a popular apple juice sold at Walmart locations in 27 states and regions due to dangerously high levels of arsenic.
Details of the Recall
The recall affects the Great Value brand apple juice sold in 8-ounce plastic bottles, packaged in 6-packs.
Approximately 9,535 cases of this product were distributed across states including Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, and many others, as well as the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
The specific bottles to look out for have a best-by date of “DEC2824” and code CT89-6 printed on them.
If you have this apple juice in your home, dispose of it immediately or return it to the store where it was purchased.
Arsenic Poisoning
Arsenic, a toxic heavy metal, can find its way into food and beverages through contaminated water, soil, and even certain pesticides or industrial processes.
While low levels of arsenic can be found in many foods and are generally harmless, elevated levels can lead to arsenic poisoning.
This can cause a range of symptoms, including headaches, stomach cramps, vomiting, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications.
The American Academy of Pediatrics has long advised limiting fruit juices, especially apple juice, in children's diets due to their susceptibility to higher arsenic levels. If you or anyone in your household experiences any symptoms after consuming this juice, seek medical attention immediately.
Walmart began the recall on August 15, but the impacted products were sold before this date.
