The XEC variant of COVID-19 is spreading across the globe and has recently caused a rise in cases in various countries, including Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

First detected in Germany in June 2024, virologists are concerned that this variant could become a dominant strain as winter approaches, particularly in regions where colder weather leads to increased indoor activity.

British doctor Helen Wall recently warned that the XEC variant causes flu-like symptoms such as high fever, cough, body aches, and severe headaches.

A defining symptom of this variant appears to be extreme exhaustion, leaving many individuals feeling particularly "knocked out."

In addition to these new symptoms, the XEC variant shares familiar characteristics with earlier COVID-19 strains, such as fatigue, loss of appetite, and diarrhea, according to a report by Focus Online.

In Germany, XEC is currently responsible for about 20% of infections, while in other parts of Europe, including the UK, the variant is also gaining traction.

Meanwhile, the KP.3.1.1 variant continues to dominate in many regions with a 60% share of cases.

While the symptoms may be more pronounced in some cases, virologists stress that existing vaccines still provide a degree of protection against severe illness.

The variant is a recombination of two Omicron subvariants, featuring mutations that allow it to bind more easily to human cells.

Experts continue to advise caution, as new mutations can bring unforeseen challenges. People are encouraged to take care of their health, especially in winter, and to seek medical advice if flu-like symptoms appear.
