The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for Daily Veggies-branded enoki mushrooms due to a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious illness.
The mushrooms were sold in 200-gram (7.05-oz) clear plastic packages and can be identified by the UPC code “8809159458890.”
They were distributed to wholesalers in New York, who then supplied retailers in other states.
The recall was initiated after the West Virginia Department of Agriculture tested samples of the product and found them positive for Listeria.
As of now, no illnesses have been reported, but the FDA is urging consumers to check their packaging and discard any affected product.
What Is Listeria—and Who’s at Risk?
Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can lead to listeriosis, a serious infection most dangerous for:
Older adults (65+)
Pregnant individuals
People with weakened immune systems
Infants and young children
Symptoms can include fever, headache, muscle aches, nausea or vomiting, and diarrhea.
More severe symptoms may include confusion, loss of balance, neck stiffness, and even convulsions.
If you’ve consumed this product and are experiencing symptoms, especially if you fall into a higher-risk group, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
What to Do if You Bought These Mushrooms
If you have a package of Daily Veggies enoki mushrooms with the UPC “8809159458890”, do not consume them.
Dispose of the product safely
Sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the mushrooms
Monitor for symptoms if you’ve already consumed them
The FDA also advises consumers to stay informed about ongoing food recalls, particularly for fresh produce and refrigerated items, which can be more vulnerable to bacterial contamination.
