If orange-colored water suddenly flows from your tap, it can be alarming—but this discoloration is usually harmless.
According to myHOMEBOOK, this issue is common in older buildings and is often caused by rust particles in the water.
These fine particles typically come from old, galvanized pipes where the protective zinc layer has gradually worn away. Unprotected steel pipes, which may also introduce rust into the water, were once used but are no longer permitted.
Discoloration is more likely to occur if water has been standing for a long period, such as after a vacation.
Generally, these rust particles are harmless and should clear up if you run the tap at full pressure for a few minutes. However, if the orange tint persists, it’s best to contact a plumber.
Tenants should notify their landlord, who can arrange for a professional inspection and necessary repairs.
The Berlin Waterworks and other experts also recommend regularly descaling the faucet aerator to help prevent the buildup of germs.
