The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has announced an urgent recall of hummus sold at retailers across multiple provinces, after a consumer allergic to peanuts suffered a reaction due to undeclared peanut content in the product.

The recalled item is:

  • Brand: Habibi’s Mediterranean Foods

  • Product: Hummus Lebanese Style

  • Packaging: 450-gram plastic container

  • UPC Code: 6 83830 00911 7

  • Best-Before Date: June 17, 2025

The hummus was sold in Alberta, British Columbia, and possibly other provinces and territories.

Consumers are being urged to check their refrigerators immediately and to dispose of or return the product to the store where it was purchased.

Why the Hummus Is Being Recalled

According to the CFIA, the recall was initiated after the product was found to contain peanuts, a major allergen that was not listed on the label.

A consumer allergic to peanuts reportedly experienced a reaction after consuming the product, triggering the alert.

People with peanut allergies are at risk of serious and potentially life-threatening reactions, including anaphylaxis—a severe condition that can include symptoms such as:

  • Hives or skin rash

  • Swelling of the lips, face, or throat

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Abdominal pain

  • Dizziness or fainting

Anyone experiencing these symptoms after consuming this hummus should seek emergency medical attention immediately by calling 911.

What to Do If You Have the Recalled Product

Consumers who have purchased this product should:

  • Check the label for the matching UPC and best-before date

  • Do not eat it, especially if you or someone in your household has a peanut allergy

  • Throw the product away or return it to the place of purchase for a full refund

The CFIA continues to monitor the situation and advises Canadians to stay alert for updates in case the recall expands to other products or regions.

For further information or concerns, consumers are encouraged to contact the CFIA directly through their official website or consumer hotline.
