In many homes, a very common mistake is made when it comes to storing onions.

Trending Now

In many kitchens, people unknowingly shorten the shelf life of their onions by storing them incorrectly.

Onions are essential in cooking, adding great flavor to countless dishes, but improper storage can cause them to spoil faster.

Many people keep onions at room temperature, but they actually last longer in a cool, dry place—not in a hot, humid area, and definitely not in plastic bags.

Ideally, store onions at 5-6 degrees Celsius. Avoid the fridge (unless they’re chopped) and keep them separate from potatoes, which can speed up their decay.

Pro Tip: Chop Onions Without Tears

Tearing up while chopping onions is a familiar struggle, but there’s a way to avoid it!

Chef Gordon Ramsay shares a trick: don’t cut off the root ends of the onion, where the tear-inducing juices are most concentrated.

Instead, halve the onion lengthwise, then slice thinly in one direction, gathering it as you go. Use your fingers to guide the knife for safer chopping.

Ramsay’s method makes it easier to chop without tears—and you can see it in action on his YouTube channel!
