A recent study by researchers at the University of Colorado has highlighted a simple yet frequently ignored bathroom practice: closing the toilet lid before flushing.
The researchers used various technical tools, like laser lights and cameras, to observe what occurs when the toilet is flushed with the lid open.
According to their findings, you might want to reconsider leaving the lid open the next time you flush.
This was highlighted by Chilean media outlet EL Cronista.
A Cloud of Contaminants
John Crimaldi, the head of the research team, explains that flushing without the lid down enables bacteria from the toilet to disperse throughout the bathroom.
These tiny droplets can circulate in the air, potentially contaminating every surface in the bathroom, including toothbrushes.
Crimaldi further clarifies that these droplets, possibly carrying anything from cold viruses to E. coli bacteria, can remain airborne for several minutes.
The scientists' recommendation?
Close the toilet lid before flushing.
This straightforward action can significantly lessen the spread of bacteria through the air, keeping them contained within the toilet bowl.
Additionally, the team advises regular ventilation and thorough cleaning of the toilet to ensure a sanitary bathroom environment.
