Samsung is recalling several models of its electric slide-in ranges due to a serious fire hazard.

According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the recall comes after Samsung received over 300 reports of the ranges’ front-mounted knobs being accidentally turned on by people or pets.

These incidents have led to approximately 250 fires, 18 of which caused extensive property damage. 40 injuries have been reported, with eight requiring medical attention.

There have also been reports of seven fires that resulted in the deaths of pets.

Next Step

Samsung is offering affected customers a free set of knob locks or covers designed to prevent accidental activation. If you own one of these ranges, you can contact Samsung to receive these safety devices.

In the meantime, Samsung and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommend the following precautions:

  • Keep children and pets away from the stove knobs.

  • Double-check that all knobs are in the “off” position before leaving your home or going to bed.

  • Never place or leave items on the stovetop when it’s not in use, as they could ignite if the stove is accidentally turned on.

For those with Wi-Fi-enabled models, Samsung suggests activating the “Cooktop On” notification through the Samsung SmartThings app. This feature alerts you on your smartphone when a burner has been turned on, providing an extra layer of security.
