If spiders give you the creeps, there’s an easy and natural way to keep them from sneaking into your home this autumn.

Although there are generally fewer insects during the colder months, it's not uncommon for the occasional beetle or moth to wander inside. For most, this is hardly an issue, as these tiny intruders can be easily caught and set free outdoors.

However, if a spider makes its way into the living room, it can cause quite a stir—especially for those with arachnophobia.

Despite being incredibly helpful creatures, many people are still frightened by them. But killing them isn’t the answer!

Fortunately, there’s a simple, natural trick to keep them out—and it involves something you can easily collect during your next autumn walk: chestnuts!

According to an article in Freundin, the humble chestnut, which is plentiful in autumn, can act as a spider deterrent.

It’s not about magic—it's the smell!

Spiders are believed to dislike the scent that chestnuts give off once they’re cracked open. Here’s how you can use them to your advantage.

How to Use Chestnuts to Repel Spiders

  1. Collect Chestnuts: On your next autumn stroll, gather a few chestnuts. They’re easy to find and totally natural.

  2. Crack Them Open: Once home, split the chestnuts slightly by hitting them gently with a hammer or a heavy object. Don’t cut them in half, just enough to release their smell.

  3. Place Them Strategically: Place the cracked chestnuts near entry points like window sills, balcony doors, or the front door—anywhere spiders might find their way inside.

  4. Replace Every Month: Chestnuts lose their scent over time, so make sure to replace them about every four weeks to keep them effective.
