Keeping an opened avocado fresh can be a challenge for many.
The characteristic brown discoloration that develops quickly is due to oxidation—a natural chemical process in which the pulp reacts with oxygen.
Although the brownish surface does not make the avocado inedible, it can affect the taste and texture, often making the fruit seem less appetizing.
Over time, experts have developed various methods to preserve the quality of avocados while reducing food waste.
One of the most effective tricks is the use of citrus fruits, explains Gina Widjaja of the Hass Avocado Board.
"Simply spray the exposed surface with lemon or lime juice. The acids in citrus fruits slow down oxidation by reducing exposure to oxygen," she explains.
To maximize the effect, it is recommended to cover the fruit tightly with cling film and store it in the refrigerator, as the lower temperature helps extend its shelf life.

Other Clever Methods to Keep Avocados Fresh
Other methods can also be used depending on the situation. Leaving the pit in the uneaten half can help slow oxidation, as it reduces the surface area exposed to air.
Brushing the exposed flesh with olive oil can create a protective barrier against oxygen, though it may slightly alter the flavor.
For those who don't plan to use the avocado immediately, pureeing it can be a great solution. Guacamole, when covered with plastic wrap or a thin layer of oil, prevents oxidation and preserves its fresh taste.
Despite the challenges of storage, the avocado remains a true nutritional powerhouse. This fruit is rich in healthy fats that promote heart health, as well as antioxidants, vitamins, and fiber that support digestion and overall well-being.
