Beginning September 1st, new EU regulations for hand luggage will take effect.

Trending Now

Starting September 1st, new hand luggage regulations will come into force across the European Union, bringing changes that passengers need to be aware of when flying.

These new rules will impact both the carrying of liquids and the size and number of luggage pieces allowed on board.

Stricter Rules for Liquids

Previously, some airports had relaxed the rules for liquids in hand luggage, but the stricter regulations are now back in place.

Under the new guidelines, liquids can only be carried in containers with a maximum capacity of 100 milliliters.

These containers must be placed in a transparent, sealable plastic bag with a maximum size of 20 x 20 centimeters.

Each passenger is limited to one such bag, which cannot exceed a total volume of 1 liter.

However, there are exceptions for airports that use modern CT scanners, such as Hamburg or London City Airport. At these locations, liquids can remain in your suitcase as long as the 100-milliliter rule is followed.

New Size and Weight Limits

In addition to changes in liquid regulations, the size and weight limits for hand luggage are also being standardized.

Under the new rules, hand luggage may be no larger than 55 x 40 x 20 centimeters and must weigh no more than 10 kilograms.

Passengers are also allowed to bring one additional small piece of hand luggage, such as a handbag or laptop bag. This item must fit under the seat in front of you and can be no larger than 40 x 30 x 15 centimeters.

Why These Changes?

According to a report by CHIP, the new regulations are intended to simplify travel, especially for those with stopovers, by standardizing rules that previously varied between airlines. This change aims to make the boarding process smoother and reduce confusion among travelers.

If you're planning to travel in the EU from September 1st onward, be sure to check your luggage against these new requirements to avoid any surprises at the airport.
