To mark the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Australia has imposed new sanctions on 70 individuals and 79 Russia-linked entities.
The government called this the "largest package" of restrictions Australia has introduced since February 2022.
According to a press release, these sanctions target Russian-installed officials in occupied Ukrainian regions, including "so-called ministers, judges, and prosecutors."
They also apply to people and companies involved in military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, as well as Russian defense, transport, and financial businesses.
“Australia has now imposed more than 1,400 sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The government is making sure Australians do not unintentionally support Russia’s war economy,” the Australian government said.
It also repeated its call for Moscow to end the war immediately and follow international laws, including those protecting civilians and prisoners of war.
New Zealand, UK, and EU Join in Expanding Sanctions
New Zealand also introduced sanctions to mark the anniversary.
These target 27 individuals and 25 entities, including Russian energy companies and North Korean officials helping Moscow. Since 2022, New Zealand has sanctioned over 1,700 individuals and companies and placed trade restrictions on Russia.
Meanwhile, British Foreign Secretary David Lammy announced plans for the UK’s largest sanctions package against Russia, set for approval on February 24.
"Now is the time to tighten the screws," he said.
According to Reuters, the measures will affect Russian politicians, civil servants, and business leaders close to the Kremlin.
The EU is also preparing its 16th round of sanctions.
These will include a gradual ban on Russian aluminum imports, cutting 13 Russian banks from the SWIFT payment system, and restrictions on eight media outlets. Additionally, 73 ships linked to Russia’s secret oil export operations will be blacklisted. Personal sanctions will also be imposed on 48 individuals and 35 companies.
