A night out can sometimes be a costly affair, especially as rising prices make dining and socializing more expensive.
From food to drinks, the cost of a simple evening has climbed significantly in recent years.
But for one Australian journalist, a night out in Manchester turned into an unthinkable financial mishap that he says will stay with him for life.
A Shocking Bill
The journalist, visiting Manchester from Sydney, was enjoying a night out with cricket players when he purchased a beer at a local bar, according to Digi24.
Using his phone to pay, he encountered an issue with the initial transaction, prompting him to enter his PIN on the second attempt.
He declined a receipt and carried on with his evening, unaware that the transaction had gone far from normal.
Bar staff quickly noticed the problem: £55,000 had been charged for the single drink.
They immediately informed the journalist, who was understandably stunned.
“It seems like, while entering my PIN, some numbers were added to the total,” he said later. He jokingly admitted that wearing his glasses might have prevented the error.
A Case of Mistaken Assumptions
Initially, the journalist thought his card had been cloned, recalling an earlier incident when his bank flagged fraudulent activity involving a beer purchase in Sydney.
Confident that his bank would block any unusual transactions, he didn’t consider the possibility of such an error.
The following morning, his wife called, questioning the hefty charge.
“She thought I’d put down a deposit on a house in Manchester,” he quipped.
