The Biden administration has reportedly given Ukraine the green light to use U.S.-supplied weapons for deep strikes into Russian territory.
Multiple outlets, including Reuters, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, cite sources familiar with the decision.
Officials indicate that the long-range weapons will be employed against Russian and North Korean forces, particularly in Russia's western Kursk region, to bolster Ukrainian defenses.
According to Reuters, Ukraine is gearing up for its first long-range strikes using ATACMS missiles, which have a range of up to 306 km (190 miles). The strikes are expected in the coming days.
A U.S. official emphasized that this decision also serves as a warning to North Korea. Kim Jong Un, who has reportedly deployed troops to support Russia, must understand that such actions come with significant costs, the official said.
Reports suggest that North Korea may be planning to send as many as 100,000 troops to aid Russia in its war against Ukraine.
This follows earlier claims by South Korean intelligence that approximately 12,000 North Korean soldiers have already been deployed to assist Moscow's military efforts. The deployment underscores Pyongyang's deepening involvement in the conflict, drawing sharp criticism from G-20 nations.
