President Joe Biden has officially signed legislation that bans the importation of Russian uranium into the United States.
The White House confirmed the signing of the "Law Banning the Import of Russian Uranium," which specifically targets unirradiated low-enriched uranium produced in the Russian Federation or by a Russian enterprise.
The legislation was enacted on Monday, May 13, 2024, and aims to reduce U.S. dependence on Russian energy resources, particularly within the civil nuclear energy sector.
This development was reported by the Russian news outlet Interfax.
Jake Sullivan, the President's National Security Adviser, highlighted the ban's role in enhancing the "energy and economic security" of the United States.
According to Sullivan, this measure will decrease U.S. reliance on Russian nuclear resources, thereby securing the nation's energy sector for future generations. He also noted the recent allocation of $2.72 billion in federal funding to stimulate the creation of new enrichment capacity in the United States.
"This will send a clear signal to the industry that we are committed to long-term growth in our nuclear sector," Sullivan added.
This legislative action follows the U.S. Senate's vote to pass the law banning Russian uranium imports. Prior to the ban, Russia supplied nearly a quarter of the enriched uranium used in over 90 commercial U.S. reactors, making it the top foreign supplier.
