A major political transition is taking place in Washington as Joe Biden prepares to leave the White House.

After attending Donald Trump’s inauguration on Monday, Biden and his wife, Jill, will board a flight to California, marking the end of his presidency.

Before their departure, the Bidens will follow tradition by welcoming the new president and first lady, Melania Trump, to the White House.

The two couples will then travel together to the U.S. Capitol, where Trump will take the oath of office and deliver his first speech as the country’s leader once again, according to 20minutos.

A Retreat for the Bidens

Following the inauguration, Biden will take part in a farewell ceremony with his staff at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland.

From there, he will fly to Santa Ynez, a well-known wine region in California, where he previously vacationed in August.

The aircraft he travels on will no longer carry the "Air Force One" designation, as he will officially no longer be president.

Instead, it will be called "Special Air Mission 46," recognizing his position as the 46th president of the United States.

Santa Ynez was a retreat for the Bidens after Biden withdrew from the presidential race following a widely criticized debate performance against Trump.

His decision led to Vice President Kamala Harris taking his place as the Democratic nominee.

During their previous visit to Santa Ynez, the Bidens stayed at a sprawling 8,000-acre ranch owned by businessman Joe Kiani, a Democratic donor and CEO of Masimo.

The location provided a quiet escape from the political turmoil in Washington.
