Powerful storms in the Black Sea have compromised Russian defensive structures near the Crimean Bridge, rendering many barriers ineffective, according to Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk.
In a televised statement, Pletenchuk described the Kerch Strait as a "highly dynamic area," where environmental forces have taken a toll on Russian fortifications. This was reported by United24 Media.
While Russian forces built parallel structures, protective systems, and submerged barriers to withstand harsh conditions, the recent storms have exposed their vulnerabilities.
"Many of these structures have failed due to storms this year and are no longer operational. Based on available information, it is evident that nature plays its role," Pletenchuk said, noting that further assessments are underway.
The spokesperson also stated that the storm season in the region is ongoing and could last another two to three months, potentially causing further damage to the defenses near the bridge.
Despite extensive fortification efforts during the summer, Pletenchuk said, the persistent harsh weather has rendered many measures ineffective.
"Given the environmental conditions, the current state of these barriers is not surprising," he remarked.
Russian Naval Activity Decreases
Pletenchuk also reported a stable situation in the Sea of Azov, with a noticeable absence of Russian vessels. He attributed this to Russian forces recognizing that their ships remain within operational reach of the Ukrainian Navy.
In the Black Sea, Russian naval activity has diminished, with their fleet now reduced to a single submarine tasked with guarding a base in Novorossiysk.
In response to Ukrainian naval drone threats, Russia had previously reinforced the Kerch Bridge in occupied Crimea by deploying additional barges as barriers. OSINT analyst Brady Africk from the American Enterprise Institute noted these efforts earlier in the year.
