Just two days before the election in Great Britain, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson has thrown his support behind the Conservatives and their leader, Rishi Sunak.
At a campaign event, Johnson stressed that despite the differences between him and Sunak, they were insignificant compared to the possible consequences of a Labour victory.
The Frankfurter Allgemeine news paper reports that Johnson explicitly warned that a Labour government threatened to destroy many of the Conservative Party's achievements.
Sunak ousted Johnson in 2022 after a Conservative mutiny that led to a deep split in the party.
Despite this past, Johnson now emphasized the need for unity to prevent a Labour victory. Sunak, who took the stage after Johnson, also tried to project an image of unity, praising the united Conservative family.
Boris Johnson, one of the best-known figures in British politics, had so far followed the election campaign from the sidelines after retiring from politics in 2023.
He supported individual candidates through video messages but had not yet appeared at major campaign events.
According to current polls, Sunak is far behind the Labour Party and its leader, Keir Starmer. Pollsters predict that the Labour Party will have a lead of around 20 percentage points in the upcoming election.
Johnson's intervention could therefore be a desperate attempt to avert the impending defeat of the Conservatives and mobilize voters at the last minute.
