EU High Representative Josep Borrell considers Russia's attempts to prevent the Global Peace Summit in Switzerland as evidence of the forum's significance in establishing a just peace in Ukraine.
Borrell made this statement in Brussels before a meeting of EU defense ministers, according to Ukrinform.
"There's a lot of pressure on everyone to ensure the success of this June forum," Borrell said, referring to the Peace Summit negotiations in Switzerland.
He noted that Russia is similarly exerting pressure, but with the intent of disrupting the summit. Russia is specifically targeting BRICS countries, urging them not to participate in the Swiss peace conference and proposing an alternative meeting in Moscow.
"If they (the Russians) don't want countries to join the peace summit in Switzerland so much, then this forum is really very important," Borrell stated.
According to Ukrinform, President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed concerns that Russian President Vladimir Putin fears the Global Peace Summit and is attempting to disrupt it by setting up a parallel platform, leading to hesitancy among some world leaders about their participation.
