Three people were injured when a sinkhole suddenly appeared on a Swedish highway near Gothenburg.

The asphalt vanished beneath motorists on the E6 highway as a sinkhole, approximately 100 meters in diameter, opened up just north of Gothenburg. The collapse resulted in injuries to three individuals, and multiple vehicles, including a bus, fell into the hole.

Swedish police reported the incident early Saturday morning.

"We received the report at 01:45. An area spanning a couple of hundred meters in all directions is affected," said Niclas Fogelqvist, a commanding officer at the rescue service in the Gothenburg area.

Both the northbound and southbound lanes of the E6 highway are impacted, and a side road has also been closed off.

The incident is believed to have been caused by persistent rain, which softened the ground enough for it to collapse.

Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of further landslides. The public is advised to avoid the area. According to Fogelqvist, there are also buildings in the affected area, but they are reportedly uninhabited.

However, a Burger King restaurant near the Stenungsund exit was destroyed in the landslide.

Emergency services are currently on the scene. Fredrik Flyberg, the police duty officer, stated that the three injured individuals have been taken to the hospital, but no specific details about their conditions are available yet.

Traffic in the area is expected to be severely disrupted for an extended period.
