The American musician Jimmy Buffet passed away last Friday evening, and now the cause of his death has been made public according to Dagens.se.

The 76-year-old musician died after a prolonged illness.

According to his family, Jimmy Buffet passed away in his home in Sag Harbor, New York, surrounded by family and friends. The cause of death was Merkel cell carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of skin cancer that he had been diagnosed with four years ago. This was a secret he had kept for all those years, and it's only now being revealed that he had cancer.

In a statement, the family mentioned that Buffet was receiving treatment for the cancer until the very end and had last performed in early July.

Jimmy Buffet was best known for his 1977 hit "Margaritaville," which reached the eighth position on the American charts. His career spanned over 50 years, during which he sold millions of albums.

His 1985 album 'Songs You Know by Heart' alone sold more than 7 million copies worldwide.

Survived by family

Jimmy Buffet is survived by his wife, Jane, their two daughters, Sarah and Savannah, and their son, Cameron.
