Veteran actor Mike Nussbaum, renowned for his roles in iconic films such as "Men in Black" and "Field of Dreams," has passed away at the age of 99, just days shy of his 100th birthday.
His daughter Karen reported his passing to TMZ, noting that he died of old age while in hospice care, where he spent his final year. "It was his time," she said.
An Illustrious Career in the Arts
Nussbaum, one of the oldest working actors in the industry, continued to earn credits as recently as 2020. Most of his blockbuster work, however, came in the 1980s and '90s, with his most iconic role being Gentle Rosenberg in "Men in Black."
Beyond the screen, the Chicagoan actor was also prolific on stage, performing in a run of "Hamlet" at the age of 95. Despite his success, Nussbaum remained modest throughout his career.
Reflections on a Storied Life
In a 2019 interview with the Chicago Sun-Times, Nussbaum reflected on his longevity in the arts: “I’m lucky. Genetic luck. I work out and I try to eat sensibly. I gave up smoking about 50 years ago. It’s just pure luck.”
He attributed much of his career success to being based in Chicago, finding New York and LA less conducive to art. Nussbaum is remembered for his sage advice and kind demeanor, both on and off the set.
Nussbaum's passing marks the end of an era in film and theatre, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances and a life dedicated to the arts. He is survived by his three children.
